 Classic and no clutter: Deena Perry's interiors sit firmly between spare and sumptuous. "I strive for a strong sense of structured harmony and a restrained visual focus," says Deena, who has passionately designed interiors for 25 years throughout the country as well as been featured in numerous magazines and books. "There is a fine line in design when less it too little and more is too much, where less is lacking and too much is diffused clutter and cacophony," Deena explains. "Both create environments that leave people unnutured and unsoothed. The counterbalance and interplay of one item to the next creates the music, power, uniqueness and enjoyment that define our environments as they define and expand ourselves." By placing "a contemporary Holly Hunt dining table on a textured sisal rug or combining a moss-rock fireplace with sensuously smooth plaster walls," Deena integrates dualities. She mixes elements that are earthy versus urbane, warm yet restrained, contemporary versus old world, charging her interiors with unexpected juxtapositions of materials as well as styles.
Best known for her remarkable sense of color along with a great sense of humor, Deena often laughingly quotes an old Chinese proverb, "If you buy the best, you only cry once." She believes that her clients keep coming back to her because she has an innovative, timeless approach to design as well as a commitment to the individual needs and expectations of her clients. "I try never to design a room that looks like it has been conceived at one point in time. It is too predictable and loses its humanity." Deena realizes that her clients' homes are reflective of their lifestyle, their taste and what is most important to them in the overall scheme of things. "I believe that good design is that strange sophisticated blend of the varied aspects of a person's soul."
Her strong current of old world inclinations are expressed in interiors of impressive variety as well as in her integration of scale and color with restrained dramatic accents. "Excellent design encompasses great taste and extends from many design styles," she says.
